Students in this program will be provided the opportunities to learn, apply, and experience the following Big Ideas:
All in all, this course focuses on providing a safe space for students to gain a deeper understanding of the shared history of this land. We will encourage and value open mindedness and vulnerability. We will learn about the past and present experiences, perspectives, and worldview of First Peoples, as well as their values and beliefs surrounding self, family, community, and the land. We will be building on previous communication skills, and also gain a deeper understanding of critical thinking skills and tools connected to the First Peoples Principles of Learning and Indigenous teachings.
As we challenge and expand our perspectives, we will explore diverse, authentic oral, written, and visual Indigenous texts. Because this is a cross-curricular program, we will have the opportunity to experience these texts and connect them to key concepts in Outdoor Education. This will be done in the classroom, as well as during the variety of experiences provided by Outdoor Education.
Our goal is to create a community of learners who value themselves, the people around them, and the opportunities of learning that life provides.
In the end, we will complete this course and this program with valuable tools to be thoughtful, socially responsible citizens of Canada and the world.
- Voice is powerful and evocative.
- The exploration of text and story deepens understanding of one’s identity, others, and the world.
- First Peoples texts and stories provide insight into key aspects of Canada’s past, present, and future.
- Oral and other texts are socially, culturally, geographically, and historically constructed.
- Self-representation through authentic First Peoples text is a means to foster justice.
- First Peoples voices and texts play a role within the process of Reconciliation.
